Armenian Earthquake

YEREVAN, Armenia () -- A powerful earthquake shook northeastern Armenia on Friday, destroying dozens of buildings and injuring at least two people, officials said.

The quake had a preliminary magnitude of between 5 and 6 and was centered near Idzhevan, about 100 kilometers northeast of the capital Yerevan, the National Seismic Protection Service said.

The quake knocked down the walls of 50 buildings near the epicenter and downed power and telephone lines, the local officials said.

A 6.9 quake in Armenia on Dec. 7, 1988, killed at least 25,000 people.
