Afghans Flee North

ALMATY, Kazakhstan ( -- Thousands of Afghan refugees who fled last week want to remain in neighboring Turkmenistan despite safe-conduct guarantees by the Islamic Taliban militia, the Red Cross said Monday.

"The Taliban want them to return," Bob McKerrow, head of the Almaty-based regional mission of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, said. "But the refugees are digging in their toes, they don't want to move back at this time."

McKerrow said about 8,000 Afghan refugees, not 9,000 as earlier reported by the Red Cross, fled to Turkmenistan from northern Afghanistan following clashes in the region last week.
