Land Mine Ban Backed

BRUSSELS, Belgium -- Ninety-five countries have expressed their support for the first international land mine ban treaty, to be signed in Ottawa in December, officials at a Brussels conference said Friday.

The countries have signed the so-called Brussels Declaration that will form the basis for negotiations in Oslo, Norway, in September on the exact wording of the Ottawa treaty.

"This is a milestone on the road to a complete ban," Belgian Foreign Minister Erik Derycke told the conference, adding: "It is too early to cry victory; we have to wait for the final signing in Ottawa."
