Kovalyov Denies Video

MOSCOW -- The Russian justice minister, suspended by President Boris Yeltsin over a scandal involving provocative photographs and video footage, said in an interview published Friday that the pictures were fraudulent.

Valentin Kovalyov said the photographs and a video tape they were taken from, which appear to depict him with naked women at a sauna, had been faked and published in an effort to discredit him.

"I categorically deny the authenticity of the video materials,'' Kovalyov was quoted as saying in the daily newspaper Izvestia.

The scandal broke last Saturday, when a Moscow tabloid published photos purporting to show Kovalyov in the bath-house allegedly frequented by a mafia gang, and suggested links to a banker jailed under suspicion of embezzling millions of dollars.
