Italy, Spain Trump Favorites

BADALONA, Spain -- Italy caused the first big upset of the European men's basketball championships by beating favorite Yugoslavia 74-69.

The fancied Croatian side went down 78-71 to Spain on Thursday.

Both Italy and Spain guaranteed themselves places in the second phase, while Lithuania and Greece will also go through after beating France and Russia, respectively.

Neither Croatia nor Yugoslavia are likely to miss out on the next round, as only the bottom team from each group will be eliminated.

Italy went in at the break 42-35 up, and extended its lead in the second half before allowing Yugoslavia to fight back in a frantic final five minutes.

Carlton Myers was the top scorer for the Italians with 23 points.

Another naturalized American, Mike Smith, was also in fine form as Spain turned around a four-point deficit at the break.

Greece started strongly to build up a commanding 39-21 lead against Russia.

But consecutive 3-pointers from Igor Koudelin enabled the Russians to go in at the break only 10 points adrift, and in the end the Greeks struggled to take the game 74-72.
