Congo Leader Freed

KINSHASA, Congo -- Congo's main opposition leader was released from custody Friday after a 10-hour detention in which he said police ordered him to abandon politics.

"These methods hark back to the era of Mobutu's police,'' Etienne Tshisekedi told about 300 supporters outside his home after he was freed. Dictator Mobutu Sese Seko was ousted by rebels last month and replaced by President Laurent Kabila.

Tshisekedi said, officers "told me I have lots of influence over the press and I must muzzle the press. They told me to abandon politics.''
