Izvestia Editors Lose Battle for Control

Izvestia editors have lost their struggle to retain control of the commercial side of the influential Moscow newspaper after the failure of Igor Golembiovsky to win reappointment as the president of Izvestia Co. It remains unclear following the results of a special shareholders meeting Monday whether Golembiovsky will be able to retain his editorial control. After months of infighting, the shareholders meeting amended the company's charter and elected a new board of directors. The board appointed Dmitry Murzin, editor of Financial Izvestia, a business supplement to the newspaper, as the company's new president. The battle for Izvestia has had political overtones and was viewed as a cause celebre among Russian journalists trying to assert their independence from the government-connected big-business interests that emerged as the owners of the newspaper.
