Turkish Army Meets

ANKARA, Turkey () -- A marathon meeting of Turkey's secularist army ended Monday with an announcement that it had taken "necessary decisions" to deal with suspected Moslem activists in its ranks.

A television station said the generals had imposed their will on Prime Minister Necmettin Erbakan and dismissed officers suspected of Islamist tendencies.

"Prime Minister Erbakan objected to some of the expulsion dossiers but signed the vast majority of them," NTV television reported.

Monday's meeting had been watched for possible effect on the future of Erbakan's Islamist-led coalition, brought to breaking point by previous army pressure for an end to an Islamist resurgence.
