Premier Apologizes

MELBOURNE, Australia () -- Australian Prime Minister John Howard made an unexpected personal apology Monday to tens of thousands of Aborigines taken from their parents under a past policy of forced assimilation.

Howard's apology came only a few hours before his government released a human rights report saying the forced assimilation amounted to genocide.

But Howard fell short of offering an official apology as called for by the Human Rights Commission in its report into the "Stolen Generation," Aborigines taken from their parents between the 1880s and the 1960s.
