Parliamentary Brawl

KIEV -- More than 50 Ukrainian lawmakers took part in a brawl on the floor of parliament Tuesday during a discussion of a violent Victory Day rally in western Ukraine.

Pro-communist legislators accused the authorities of being behind a clash between police and veterans during the May 9 demonstration in Lviv, a city dominated by nationalists.

"We demand an explanation. Why were policemen beating the veterans?'' Ukraine's Communist leader Petro Simonenko said in parliament.

In response, radical nationalist Stepan Khmara dragged Simonenko off the platform.

The brawl continued in the aisle, with others joining, until at least 50 people were pushing and pulling each other.
