Mayor: Fleet Pact Near

KIEV () -- Ukraine and Russia are close to an agreement on the Black Sea fleet and are likely to end their long-running dispute next week, the mayor of the fleet's main base has said.

Returning to Ukraine after negotiations on the former Soviet naval force in Moscow, Sevastopol Mayor Viktor Semyonov was quoted by Interfax as saying Saturday that the sides are near an agreement.

President Boris Yeltsin is scheduled to visit Kiev next Friday and Saturday for talks with Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma. The two are expected to discuss the fleet and a friendship treaty aimed at soothing tension between the Slavic neighbors.
