Israeli Diplomat Quits

JERUSALEM -- Israel's new ambassador to Jordan resigned Tuesday after being kept in the dark by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about a secret meeting the Israeli leader held with King Hussein.

"I have no intention to be a censor or an obstacle to meetings but there is a need to brief the embassy on actions being taken," Israel radio quoted Ambassador Oded Eran as saying.

Netanyahu kept his new appointee out of the loop about the meeting in the Jordanian Red Sea resort of Aqaba last Thursday over a water dispute, said an official who asked not to be identified.
