Graf Topples Croatian Teen in Strasbourg Final

STRASBOURG, France -- World No. 2 Steffi Graf won the $250,000 WTA tournament here on with a 6-2, 7-5 victory over 15-year-old Croatian Mirjana Lucic.

Unranked qualifier Lucic, however, gave Graf some anxious moments in the second set. Graf swept through the first set 6-2 in 30 minutes before Lucic streaked ahead 4-2 in the second set.

Graf then kept her cool to take the winners trophy.

Graf, who won only one game when she was beaten by Amanda Coetzer in the quarterfinals in Berlin last week, turned the tables on her German Open nemesis by scoring an exciting 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7/4) semifinal win on Friday.

In, St. Poelten, Austria, Uruguay's Marcelo Filippini walked away $425,000 richer and full of confidence after defeating seventh-seeded Patrick Rafter of Australia in the final match of the Raifeissen Grand Prix.

Unseeded Filippini won Saturday's match 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 to earn the fifth tournament title of his career.

Rafter's customary crack service was little seen in the first set. Despite getting two breaks, however, Filippini had to go into a tiebreaker.

"The decisive thing was that I held Patrick back and won,'' said Filippini.

Czech Jana Novotna completed a stunning 7-5, 6-1 victory over top seed Monica Seles in the Madrid Open final.

Second seed Novotna trailed 5-3 in the first set but turned Saturday's match around by winning eight successive games. Seles never recovered.
