Broadway Winner

When the envelopes are ripped open May 18 at the Booth Theater in New York, all the winners of this year's Drama Desk awards will be surprises but one.

So much for secrecy and confidentiality: The recipient of a special prize honoring the season's best tour by an out-of-town theater on Broadway was announced Monday in Moscow.

And the winner is ... the Sovremennik Theater.

The Sovremennik, led by artistic director Galina Volchek, performed last November at the Lunt-Fontanne Theater on West 46th Street. Its repertoire while in the Big Apple consisted of an old production of Anton Chekhov's "Three Sisters" and an equally aged dramatization of Yevgenia Ginzburg's memoirs of the gulag, "Into the Whirlwind."

While New York critics complained about the "rickety" and "shabby-looking" set of "Three Sisters," the acting won accolades, with Marina Neyolova and Valentin Gaft being singled out by most critics for top kudos.

Volchek will travel to New York to receive the award at the ceremonies Sunday.

It was also disclosed on Monday that the theater will return to New York in the fall with a refurbished version of Chekhov's "The Cherry Orchard," a show that previously ran at the Sovremennik but has not been seen for some time. Neyolova will play the leading lady, Madame Ranevskaya, in the revived version.
