Border Violations Drop

VLADIVOSTOK, Far East () -- Russia's Pacific sea boundary, crossed constantly by fish poachers in recent years, was violated only 22 times last year, the district border guards commander said Monday.

Japanese boats frequently violate Russia's sea border to fish in waters near the disputed Kuril Islands, according to Russian officials. Russia seized the islands after World War II, and Japan has demanded them back.

As recently as 1993 there were 10,000 such border violations reported.

District commander Vitaly Sedykh said the 22 violations last year were mainly due to navigational mistakes, Interfax reported.
