Army Attacks Tigers

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka -- Sri Lankan troops inched their way forward into the heartland of the Tamil Tiger rebels after launching a major offensive, code-named "Jaya Sikurui," or "Sure of Victory," on Tuesday to open a strategic land route to the northern, government-held town of Jaffna.

Troops backed by helicopter gunships, artillery and tanks advanced 5 kilometers into the rebel-held Wanni region, meeting little resistance, a Defense Ministry statement said.

"Enemy transmissions indicated four Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam cadres were killed and a fair number were wounded," the statement said.
