31 Dead in China Mine

BEIJING -- At least 31 people have been killed in a mining accident in China's eastern Shandong province, local officials said Monday.

The accident, in the state-owned Nanxiaye mine on the outskirts of Laiwu city, was caused by a gas explosion.

"The explosion happened at 3:15 p.m. on May 2 and it killed 31 miners," the municipal government's spokesman said.

China's underfunded and badly-equipped mining industry has been frequently struck by disasters.
