Zarya Shocks CSKA With Surprise Win

Premier league team CSKA Moscow suffered a surprise home defeat at the hands of first division Zarya in the third round of the Russian Cup.

Zarya, third from bottom, battled the Army team to a scoreless draw after extra time, then went through to the quarterfinal 8-7 on penalties.

Last year's runners-up, Alania Vladikavkaz, crashed 1-0 to unheralded Krylya Sovietov in Samara. Garnik Avalyan scored a 50th minute winner.

Another premier division side, Zenit of St. Petersburg, was held 0-0 after extra time at home to first division Lokomotiv Chita, but won 4-3 on penalties.

Torpedo Moscow saved face for the bigger clubs when it crushed Lada Tolyatti 6-1 in Moscow. Having led 1-0 at halftime, the Muscovites went on a second-half spree, including scoring three times in the last 12 minutes.

Zarya won the right to host yet another Moscow side, Dinamo, in the quarterfinals on May 6, while Zenit takes on Spartak Moscow in St. Petersburg. Krylya Sovietov hosts Rotor Volgograd and Torpedo plays last year's cup winners Lokomotiv in a Moscow derby.
