Seoul Confirms Verdict

SEOUL, South Korea () -- South Korea's Supreme Court on Thursday rejected prosecution appeals against reduced sentences for former presidents Chun Doo Hwan and Roh Tae-woo for their roles in a coup and an army massacre.

It upheld a lower appeals court's December decision to commute Chun's death sentence to life in jail and Roh's 22 1/2-year prison term to 17 years for mutiny and treason.

The charges relate to a 1979 coup that thrust then army general Chun to power, and a massacre in 1980 in the city of Kwangju.
