Pankratov Flops

GOTHENBURG, Sweden () -- Olympic champion Denis Pankratov failed to make the final of the men's 100 meters butterfly on the opening day of the world short-course swimming championships Thursday. The Russian world record holder never reached his customary stride, trailing from the outset of the last heat behind teammate Konstantin Ushkov.

Ushkov led at the 50-meter mark in 24.22 seconds, with Pankratov a remote fifth in 25.04.

Pankratov could do nothing to cut back the deficit and finished more than a second behind Swedish winner Lars Frolander.
