Medics End Strike

NAKHODKA, Far East () -- Ambulance medics in Russia's Far East ended an 11-day hunger strike Thursday when officials handed over their February wages and promised the rest of their back pay soon, a news agency said.

The workers are barred by law from striking, but carried out the hunger strike while continuing to respond to emergency calls, in an attempt to publicize their plight and get three months' of back wages.

Senior physician Jeanna Rybalchenko, one of the participants, told Itar-Tass that their health had dramatically deteriorated by the end of the protest action.
