Mediator's Peru Plea

LIMA, Peru () -- A leading mediator in Lima's 114-day-old hostage crisis called on the government and Marxist rebels to put pride aside in the search for the release of 72 captives held inside the Japanese ambassador's home.

"I call on both sides to think hard about the responsibility they have ... about pride, about political objectives," Vatican representative Juan Luis Cipriani said late Wednesday.

Talks between rebel leader Nestor Cerpa Cartolini and government negotiator Domingo Palermo ended abruptly March 12 in disagreement over the rebels' main demand for the release of about 450 jailed comrades.
