Gingrich in Japan

TOKYO () -- U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich met with Japanese business leaders Monday after saying he hoped to learn the secrets of Japan's economic success during his brief visit to the country.

In talks with businessmen including the chairmen of Mitsubishi Corp. and Toyota Motor Corp., Gingrich urged Japan to open its markets wider to international competition, a spokesman for the Japan Federation of Economic Organizations said.

He quoted Gingrich as saying that would serve both Japanese and U.S. interests.

Before beginning his day with breakfast with Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto, Gingrich quipped that the prospect of learning "the secrets of Japan's economic success had taken all tiredness away."
