Chemical Leak

MOSCOW () -- A chemical that leaked from a canister at a nuclear weapons research center in central Russia does not pose a health threat to the plant's personnel or nearby residents, an official said Wednesday.

The leak of cadmium dimethyl occurred Sunday at the Federal Nuclear Center in Sarov, formerly known as Arzamas-16, a top-secret nuclear complex in Soviet times.

Georgy Kaurov, head of the Nuclear Power Ministry's information service, told Interfax that measurements taken at the plant and in the town showed there was no health hazard.

Cadmium dimethyl can affect the respiratory system, and the 43 workers on duty Sunday donned gas masks and were taken to a hospital.
