Beached Whale Dies

EDINBURGH, Scotland () -- A stranded sperm whale died Monday in the shallow waters of a Scottish estuary after trying for more than a week to escape, wildlife experts said.

The 12-meter whale, nicknamed Moby, died at midday, about an hour after he beached on mud flats in the Firth of Forth at Airth, near Edinburgh, said Alex Kilgour, spokesman for a local aquarium Deep-Sea World, which had been monitoring the whale.

Moby, who was on his way to the Azores to breed, was first seen deep inside the River Forth 12 days ago. He apparently was frightened by traffic from busy road and rail bridges that span the Firth of Forth.
