Bayern Leapfrogs to Top With Early Zickler Goal

BONN, Germany -- Alexander Zickler's goal after just 15 seconds gave Bayern Munich a 1-0 home win over Werder Bremen and catapulted it back to the top of the Bundesliga.

Ruggiero Rizzitelli provided a perfect cross for Zickler, who headed past Bremen goalkeeper Oliver Reck to notch his third goal within a week.

The latest win moved Bayern above Borussia Dortmund, which went top Thursday after beating St. Pauli 1-0.

Bayer Leverkusen also moved above Dortmund and into second place with a 2-0 win over UEFA Cup semifinalists Schalke.

"The win was very important for us," Bayern coach Giovanni Trapattoni said. "We deserved it because of our performance in the first half. I suffered a bit in the second half because we lost our flow in the middle of the field."

"The goal caught us cold," said Bremen coach Hans-Juergen Doerner. "We showed we can play after that. We played well and tried to go forward. But we couldn't produce the final pass."

International striker Ulf Kirsten put Leverkusen ahead against Schalke in the 63rd minute with his 13th goal of the season. A memorable backheeler from Dutchman Eric Meijer sealed the victory.

Leverkusen is two points behind Bayern and a point ahead of third-placed Dortmund. VfB Stuttgart dropped to fourth after a 1-1 draw with Munich on Thursday.

Real Madrid missed the chance to open an 11-point lead in the Spanish championship Sunday when it drew 1-1 at Tenerife -- hours after its nearest challengers were also held to draws.

Madrid now leads the standings by nine points from Barcelona, which drew 1-1 at Valencia, and Real Betis, which fought out a goalless draw at Espanol.

Deportivo La Coruna is a further three points adrift in fourth place following its 1-1 draw at Real Sociedad on Saturday.

Real Madrid went ahead in the 59th minute through Victor Sanchez, only to see Oliver Neuville knock in the equalizer seven minutes later.
