Tajik Typhoid Spreads

ALMATY, Kazakhstan () -- A senior Tajik health official said Wednesday the former Soviet republic has been unable to stop the spread of a typhoid epidemic that has claimed the lives of at least 80 people.

"We have not been able to stop the typhoid epidemic which is growing all the time," said a high-ranking health official in the Tajik capital, Dushanbe, who asked not to be identified.

He said more than 80 people have died in Dushanbe hospitals alone and said there have been about 10,000 cases of typhoid since the beginning of year.

"The total number of dead is probably much higher as many cases have not been registered in rural areas," he said.
