Solzhenitsyn Gloomy

MOSCOW -- Noted Russian writer and Nobel Prize winner Alexander Solzhenitsyn, in a letter to prominent Russian writer Valentin Rasputin, described the current period as "loathsome and dark."

Solzhenitsyn sent the letter, published by the newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda on Tuesday, to Rasputin on the occasion of the latter's 60th birthday.

"Don't be discouraged by the stream of dirty political attacks on your public statements, made through bribed media by good-for-nothing people who do not care for the survival of Russia, and who often live outside Russia," Solzhenitsyn wrote in his letter.

"We have overcome grim decades. But the present day is loathsome in a new way and dark for all of us," he wrote.
