Rescue Cost $88,000

MAGADAN, Far East () -- An attempt by the eminent Russian traveler Dmitry Shparo and his sons Nikita and Matvey to cross the Bering Strait on skis has cost the Chukotavia company, based in Chukotka, the Russian Far East, 500 million rubles ($88,000).

The company's chief, Gennady Buydorodov, said it was his subordinates who ensured aviation support for the travelers, even though no preliminary agreement had been concluded in advance.

Buydorodov voiced the hope that the Emergency Situations Ministry will pay his company the money spent on the rescue operation.
