Renault Workers Riot

WAVRIN, France -- Striking Belgian Renault workers clashed with French police Thursday outside a yard in northern France where thousands of cars are stored, witnesses said.

Paramilitary gendarmes protecting the site at Wavrin, south of the city of Lille, fired tear gas after being stoned by some 400 workers from the Renault plant at Vilvoorde in the Brussels suburbs, due to be closed in July with the loss of 3,100 jobs.

The strikers drove to France to carry out surprise actions against Renault after company chairman Louis Schweitzer told their union representatives Wednesday that the decision to close the Vilvoorde assembly plant was irrevocable.
