Dinamo Outplayed In Playoffs

For the first time in history, Moscow's once-mighty hockey clubs will be missing from the podium of the Russian championship, to be decided next month.

No. 3 seed Torpedo Yaroslavl eliminated Dinamo, the last Moscow representative, in a hard-fought quarterfinal series. Torpedo took the series 2-0 in a shootout Monday after a 2-2 regulation tie and will face Salavat Yulaev in the semifinal.

In the other half of the draw, defending champion Lada Togliatti and Mettalurg of Magnitogorsk avoided elimination, winning their deciding games against Tyumen and Omsk on Tuesday.

Despite a surprising loss in Tyumen in game one, Lada came back with two wins at home, 3-0 and 9-4, giving Rubin little chance for an upset. After an even first period of the deciding game, Togliatti outscored the visitors 5-0 in the second, forcing Tyumen's starting goalie Andrei Vasilevsky to ask for a relief. His substitute, Sergei Koryakhin, fared a little better, giving up only two goals in the third, but the final outcome was already sealed.

Magnitogorsk had few problems topping Omsk 5-1.
