Castro Agrees to Rebels

LIMA, Peru -- Cuban President Fidel Castro formally agreed to take in Peru's Marxist rebels who have been holding 72 hostages at the Japanese ambassador's home in Lima for three months, Japan Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto said Thursday.

Japanese government sources in Tokyo said Castro told the envoy, Vice Foreign Minister Masahiko Komura, that Cuba agreed to the asylum request as a humanitarian gesture.

"Our acceptance on this issue is from a humanitarian point of view. Cuba is not a country to take in terrorism," the sources quoted Castro as saying.
