Burma Pounds Karens

BANGKOK, Thailand -- The Burmese army pounded an ethnic Karen area inside Burma with mortars Thursday, part of an attack on the rebel Karen National Union that has sent about 3,500 people fleeing toward Thailand.

Karen sources along the border said the refugees, scattered in pockets over several kilometers along the frontier, were being denied entry by Thai troops into Thailand's Ratchaburi province unless the fighting gets closer.

Relief workers believe the refugees are within range of artillery and mortars and are imperiled. They accuse the Thai army of applying overly strict definitions of endangerment.
