8 Journalists Die in '97

MOSCOW -- Eight journalists working in the territory of the former Soviet Union have lost their lives so far this year, including six in Russia, a media observer said.

Of the six slain in Russia, four were killed in March, Oleg Panfilov, head of the private non-profit Glasnost Defense Foundation, told a news conference Monday.

One journalist was killed in Kazakhstan and another in Ukraine, he said in remarks reported by Interfax.

In addition, Italian journalist Mauro Galligani disappeared in Chechnya last month, he said.

Six journalists were killed in Russia in 1996, four of them while covering the war in Chechnya, according to the U.S. Committee to Protect Journalists.
