Svanidze Talks Peace In Speech to Duma

Striking a conciliatory note in the traditionally tense relations between the State Duma and national television, the new boss of the RTR state-owned television network promised Wednesday to cooperate with deputies in improving coverage of the parliament. Nikolai Svanidze's comments came just hours before the Duma, angry at what it deems unfair coverage by the rival ORT public television network, voted to ban the channel's journalists from the chamber for a month. ""I hope that from the very beginning we will establish normal working relations,"" Svanidze, a well-known television commentator appointed RTR president last month, told deputies. He has been viewed as a close ally of the administration by many opposition politicians. RTR plans to dedicate 1 1/2 hours every week to the activities of the parliament.
