Ukrainian Naval Officer Detained

SEVASTOPOL, Ukraine -- Russian naval officers have detained a Ukrainian navy intelligence commander for lurking around the Russian Black Sea Fleet base in Sevastopol while carrying wires and flammable materials.

Senior Sergeant Volodymyr Korzh, commander of the intelligence unit of a Ukrainian marine battalion, was found hiding Saturday among a group of Russian combat vehicles, the Black Sea Fleet press service said Monday.

Dressed in unmarked combat fatigues, Korzh initially tried to run from the Russian officers who discovered him, and once detained he refused to identify himself. He remained in Russian custody Monday.

Animosity runs high between the Russian and Ukrainian navies in Sevastopol, a historic port city on the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea.
