Typhoid Outbreak

DUSHANBE, Tajikistan -- At least 10 people have died and thousands have been infected in an outbreak of typhoid fever in the capital of Tajikistan, aid officials said.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, warning that tens of thousands are at risk, called late Wednesday for urgent steps to stop it spreading.

"Already, some 3,000 cases of typhoid fever have been reported, but health authorities in Dushanbe are forecasting a 10-fold increase in the coming weeks," it said in a statement.
