Spanish Striker Killed

MADRID, Spain () -- A week-long truckers' strike that has paralyzed major roads across Spain turned violent Thursday with the death of a Spanish striker and acts of sabotage against foreign and non-striking lorry drivers.

Carmelo Ausin Pena was run over in the northern city of Burgos overnight after attempting to stop a French trucker from forcing his way through the picket line on a national highway running to the Portuguese border.

The Spanish strikers are demanding retirement at 60, recognition of professional illnesses and a reduction in the cost of petrol. Their roadblocks have caused virtual gridlock on major roads across the country, particularly in the Basque, Santander and Catalonia regions in northern Spain, running up millions of dollars in losses.
