Sharia Law

n interview with the Chechen presidential candidate Aslan Maskhadov shortly after this week's voting in Chechnya.

Aslan Aliyevich, if you become president, what will be your first orders concerning the rule of law in Chechnya?

The first thing I will do is try to establish order so that no one kills, kidnaps or sells people.

What do you think about the sharpening of the Cossack question?

If the Naursky and Shelkovsky regions are divided from Chechnya, this will lead to war once again.

Many countries are frightened by the criminal code of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, which is based on elements of sharia law. Do you intend to renounce this?

I think that we need the sharia court. There is no reason to fear that Chechnya will become an Islamic fundamentalist country. We simply won't be able to bring order here through other methods. Even during the time when Soviet laws were in force everywhere in the U.S.S.R., Chechens had recourse to sharia law. Every murder should be punished, and every man should be protected by sharia laws.
