Satellite Launches Set

Russia's top commercial satellite launcher said Tuesday that it planned to make eight Proton rocket launches in 1997, sending a total of 20 Western satellites into orbit.

Khrunichev Space Center spokesman Sergei Zhiltsov said the center is planning the first commercial launch for May, when a Proton will carry the Telstar-5 communications satellite for U.S. firm AT&T. Later flights will carry satellites for Motorola and U.S. MSI/News Corp in June and September, respectively.
