Rwanda Trial Delayed

ARUSHA, Tanzania -- The UN tribunal for the Rwanda genocide Thursday delayed the first hearing of its most prominent suspect after the defense counsel failed to appear in court.

The hearing for Theoneste Bagosora, cabinet director in Rwanda's former defense ministry, will be delayed until March 7, the presiding judge told the court.

Bagosora, widely considered the most wanted genocide suspect detained, is believed to have directed events during the first few days of massacres in Rwanda in April 1994.

An estimated 800,000 members of the Tutsi minority and Hutu moderates were slaughtered between April and July 1994 by Hutu troops, militiamen and mobs following the killing of Rwanda's Hutu president.
