Reprieve for Lokomotiv

MOSCOW () -- FIFA, the world's soccer governing body, has informed the Russian federation that it no longer has to relegate premier league club Lokomotiv of Nizhny Novgorod to the first division.

Lokomotiv has finally paid the $100,000 transfer fee owed to Israel's Maccabi Haifa for signing Ukrainian international Ivan Getsko last summer. FIFA's disciplinary committee will rule this week whether the Russian club must also pay a fine.

The Russian federation was also informed that three of its clubs, Moscow's Dinamo, CSKA and Lokomotiv, could enter the second annual Intertoto Cup this summer. Russia received an additional entry due to several European nations deciding to bypass the tournament, which is in deep financial trouble.
