Plane Engine Fails

VLADIVOSTOK, Far East -- A Russian Il-62 jet carrying 81 passengers landed safely in Vladivostok on Friday despite the breakdown of one of its four engines, Russian news agencies reported.

The pilots of the Orient-Avia airline flight, which originated in Moscow, reported the problem about five hours before landing but proceeded on to Vladivostok as scheduled, an airport official told Itar-Tass.

Reports said the crew decided to use up all the fuel as a precaution before landing, resulting in an extra 2 1/2 hours in the air. An unidentified official at Vladivostok airport said such engine malfunctions have occurred fairly frequently of late but "rarely lead to crashes," according to Itar-Tass.
