Pakistan Police Said Negligent in Attack

TEHRAN, Iran -- Iran on Thursday accused the Pakistani police of refusing to defend the Iranian cultural center in the Punjab city of Multan from an attack by unidentified gunmen.

"The policemen guarding the center made no move to confront the terrorists," Iran's official news agency IRNA charged. "According to reliable sources, several policemen charged with guarding the cultural house fled as soon as they saw the terrorists and left the scene open for their crime," it added.

Iranian diplomat Mohammad Ali Rahimi and six Pakistanis were killed by four gunmen who stormed the center on Thursday, spraying bullets inside the building, according to Pakistani police.

Rahimi held the rank of consul and had worked at the cultural center for three years.

A Pakistani electrician in the building also received bullet wounds.

Pakistani police said the assailants overpowered an armed police guard after entering the building and then after the shootings fled the scene in two cars driven by other unidentified men.
