No Strikes at Norilsk

MOSCOW -- A deadline set by workers at Norilsk Nickel for the repayment of $230 million in back wages came and went Thursday, with little sign of protests or strikes.

Norilsk spokesman Sergei Vetchinin said there were no work stoppages and that management and labor representatives were meeting in Norilsk.

Norilsk workers had threatened to recommend to the government that the state reassert control of the company, in which Uneximbank owns a controlling stake.
