Gas Pipeline Explodes

MOSCOW -- An explosion on a gas pipeline in southwestern Russia on Sunday sent flames shooting 30 meters into the air, Itar-Tass said.

It said the blast occurred on a stretch of pipeline close to the town of Maloyaroslavlets. No one was injured, but emergency services took five hours to extinguish the blaze.

Ekho Moskvy agency quoted authorities as saying the explosion had been caused by gas leaking from a corroded pipe installed some 20 years ago. The damaged branch of the pipeline had been closed for repairs.

A similar explosion occurred in the same area on Jan. 28 as a result of corrosion in pipes damaged during installation.
