Flu Claims 26

MOSCOW () -- A total of 26 people have died so far as a powerful flu epidemic has spread through Russia, a news agency reported Wednesday.

Most of the victims -- including eight children -- succumbed to influenza-induced pneumonia, Russia's federal flu center told Itar-Tass.

The epidemic is subsiding in many cities, but the situation remains critical in the southern Russian city of Krasnodar.

The epidemic has also struck hard in Ukraine, where authorities in the capital of Kiev have shut secondary schools to halt the spread. Ukrainian health officials say the flu epidemic has so far sickened 1.2 million Ukrainians, about 500,000 of them children.
