Egg Conspiracy

One correspondent investigated the steep rise in Moscow egg prices over the past two months.

A few days ago, I stopped by the Koptevsky market -- the city's least expensive, for your information -- where there are always at least 10 to 15 cars selling eggs and the carcasses of Moscow-region chickens. Ten eggs were selling for 5,800 rubles. ...

I found out from Moscow Chicken Production that the current selling price on 10 eggs is 5,000 rubles. ...

A day later, I dropped by again and saw that eggs were selling for 6,300 rubles. The all-knowing customers explained that sellers had upped prices the night before by 300 rubles and that day had added another 200 rubles. ...

The cars had all come from different chicken factories -- Novopetrovsky, Istrinsky, Tomilinsky and so on -- but had synchronized their price hikes, bringing them to one identical amount. You may not want to, but you have to wonder: Has an egg racket been set up at Koptevsky?
