Blast Hits Dormitory

PARIS -- A blast caused by a small explosive device inflicted damage but no casualties at a U.S.-run building at a Paris university housing complex overnight, police said Monday.

The device was planted outside the U.S. pavilion -- which accommodates 270 foreign students, some from the United States -- of the international student housing complex on the south side of the French capital at about 4:25 a.m local time.

The blast was apparently caused by a small gas canister the size of a fire extinguisher, according to initial investigations.

There was no claim of responsibility for the blast and no line of inquiry has been ruled out, police said. France has been on alert for bomb attacks since December, when a blast in the Paris subway killed four. .
