Admiral Charged

MOSCOW -- Russian military prosecutors have charged the chief of the Navy's general staff with abusing his position to obtain apartments for himself and his relatives, officials said Tuesday.

Admiral Igor Khmelnov has been accused of using his post to illegally acquire housing in the eastern port city of Vladivostok, said Sergei Ushakov, a spokesman for the Russian Military Prosecutor's Office in Moscow.

Vladivostok is the main base for Russia's Pacific Fleet, which Khmelnov commanded until recently. The investigation is being carried out by the fleet's prosecutors.
